Information for researchers

Getting started

Teesside University Smart Card (TUSC)

You will need your TUSC to:

  • Borrow books and other materials
  • Allow access to some University buildings
  • Use the printing system in the Library

To get your TUSC, ask at your School IT help desk. Please bring proof of your enrolment with you.

If you lose your TUSC, you can request a replacement online at http://onlineshop.tees.ac.uk

Personal identification number (PIN)

Your PIN is unique to you and is used as extra security. You will need it to use any self-services and to check or renew your loans via My Account on The Catalogue. You will also need your PIN when you renew items by telephone.

Staff and students can set up their own PINs via the URL https://myaccess.tees.ac.uk/pcs by selecting the option to "Manage your security details".

Alternatively you can ask at the iZone on the Ground Floor or telephone the Library on 01642 342100 during full service hours, press zero to speak to a staff member and request that your PIN be posted out to you

ICT account

Once you have enrolled you are allocated an ICT username and password which will be provided by your school. You need to use this to access University systems (e.g. Blackboard, E-learning@tees) and to access L&IS electronic resources. We recommend that you change your password to something you will remember using the password change system at https://myaccess.tees.ac.uk. It must have at least 8 characters and can be a mixture of letters and numbers. You can also register to be able to re-set your own password on the password change system.

We recommend that you register for self-service PIN resetting so if you forget or lose your PIN you can easily reset if from home.

Contact your Subject Librarian

The Academic Librarians are your direct link to L&IS and it's a good idea to make yourself known to the Subject Librarian for your subject area.

Access to other libraries

On occasions you may wish to  have access to other libraries and resource centres (pdf - 179kb).

In particular you might be interested in the SCONUL access scheme of which Teesside University is a member. The SCONUL access scheme is a co-operative venture between higher education libraries. It enables university staff, postgraduate research students, part-time, distance, and placement students to borrow material from other libraries. In addition, there is a provision for full-time students and for staff to use other libraries on a reference only basis. Membership is open to any higher education institution in the UK and over half are now members. For further information, see the SCONUL access scheme website.

Keeping up to date

Journal resources grow year on year and a significant number are now available in e format. Keeping yourself up to date with the latest information is a challenge for everyone.

It might be worth bearing in mind that you can use current awareness and alert services provided by online bibliographical database providers and journal publishers.

You can save the successful search profiles that have worked for you in online databases as an 'alert'. This means that the search will be run automatically on a regular basis and you will receive an e-mail listing the most recent articles added to the database matching your prolfile. The availability and means of setting up alerts differs from database to database. You can consult the help pages for the database you use to see how to set up alerts or you can speak to your Subject Librarian.

You can also use table of contents (TOC) services. These services will e-mail you the table of contents of journal titles that you want to keep up to date with. Zetoc provided by the British Library is the most comprehensive service. Many journal publishers also provide services for the titles they publish.
