Information for off-campus users
Library & Information Services (L&IS) provides a range of services which can be accessed by off-campus users. These pages are intended to help you make the most of these services and to support your studies whilst away from the University.
Throughout these pages you will be directed to factsheets, L&IS publications which give up to date information about our services and facilities. You will need to have Abode Acrobat Reader on your PC to view them. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, it is freely available. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader to your computer.
Getting Started
Teesside University smart card (TUSC) | Personal identification number (PIN) | ICT account | Email account | Access to electronic resources | Off Campus Assistant
For a general overview of our services see the
Guide to services (pdf - 1136kb).
To use our facilities and resources off campus you will need:
Teesside University Smart Card (TUSC)
This card contains your unique borrower number which allows you to borrow material and use our self-services on campus and to access other university libraries via SCONUL Access off campus.
In person
Please take proof of your enrolment to your School IT service desk. They will take your photograph and supply you with your TUSC immediately. The Library does not provide TUSCs to new students.
Personal identification number (PIN)
Your PIN is unique to you and is used as extra security. You will need it to use any self-services and to check or renew your loans via My Account on The Catalogue. You will also need your PIN when you renew items by telephone.
Staff and students can set up their own PINs via the URL https://myaccess.tees.ac.uk/pcs by selecting the option to "Manage your security details".
Alternatively you can ask at the iZone on the Ground Floor or telephone the Library on 01642 342100 during full service hours, press zero to speak to a staff member and request that your PIN be posted out to you
ICT account
Once you have enrolled you are allocated an ICT username and password which will be provided by your school. You need to use this to access University systems (e.g. Blackboard, E-learning@tees) and to access L&IS electronic resources. We recommend that you change your password to something you will remember using the password change system at https://myaccess.tees.ac.uk. It must have at least 8 characters and can be a mixture of letters and numbers. You can also register to be able to re-set your own password on the password change system.
We recommend that you register for self-service PIN resetting so if you forget or lose your PIN you can easily reset if from home.
Email account
You will also be provided with a University email account and email address once you have enrolled. This is where any University correspondence will be sent e.g. overdue notices, reservation notices and other notifications and should be checked regularly. If you already have a personal email account, check Factsheet 22 to see how to forward your University mail to your preferred account.
If you need help with your IT account you can contact your school helpdesk. More information is available at https://unity3.tees.ac.uk/helpcentre.
Access to electronic resources
There are some technical requirements to enable your off-campus PC to access the full range of electronic resources. For more information go to the technical requirements page.
Almost all electronic resources require a password to access them off campus. In most cases this will be your University ICT account username and password.
Support
If you require any assistance or information about L&IS services, please contact Library Customer Services on 01642 342100 or email libraryhelp@tees.ac.uk.
Using The Catalogue/My Account
Reserving books | Renewing books | Borrowing books | Returning books | Fines
The Catalogue contains the records of all the books and other materials which are in the Library.
From The Catalogue you can also access My Account so that you can check to see what items you have on loan, when they are due back and renew them.
You are able to renew loans, reserve items and check outstanding reservations. You can also get details of any outstanding charges and a loan and reservation history. Details of your inter library loan requests are also available.
Search The Catalogue and access your account
To use the My Account facility you need your borrower number (this is the number in the bottom right hand corner of your TUSC. If you have an older TUSC, this will be above the barcode) and your personal identification number (PIN).
If you do not have a PIN you can set up your own using the password change system at https://myaccess.tees.ac.uk and selecting "manage your security details". You will need your University ICT account username and password to do this.
Factsheet 6: The Catalogue: key to the Library stock (pdf - 80kb) has more information about searching The Catalogue.
Reserving books
Factsheet 23: Reservations (pdf - 441kb) will tell you about reserving material on loan to other users via the Web.
Renewing books
Factsheet 24: Renewals (pdf - 183kb) will tell you about renewing your books either via the Web or over the telephone at any time.
Borrowing books
You can visit the Library in person to borrow items. If you require a third party to collect items on your behalf, you will need to provide the third party with a signed letter of authorisation stating what permission has been granted. Alternatively you can use the letter of authority form to state who the third party is and what permissions have been granted. In all cases, the third party must present your TUSC with every transaction.
Letter of authority (pdf - 129kb). You can also register to use the postal service to borrow items.
Factsheet 85 (pdf - 167kb) has more information.
Returning books
Books can be returned by post to the Library. We recommend that you obtain proof of postage from the Post Office. You can also return items in person.
Fines
Fines and other outstanding charges can be paid by cheque (which should be made payable to Teesside University). Write your name and borrower number on the reverse of the cheque and send it to the Library address marked for the attention of 'Customer Services'. Outstanding charges can also be paid over the telephone using a credit or debit card (amounts of £2.50 and over). Please telephone 01642 342100 during staffed opening hours and press zero to speak to a member of staff. Charges for any postal loan need to be paid within six weeks of accrual.
Access to electronic resources
Many journals to which we subscribe are available electronically from the L&IS website at http://lis.tees.ac.uk and nearly all of these can be accessed off campus. Use the Journal Finder form on the library home page to check whether a particular title is available, or use the Article finder form to see if the Library provides access to a specific article.
Online databases are also available electronically. These can be electronic indexes to journals which you can search to find articles on a particular topic or full text databases. Use the Finding Journal Articles section of the relevant LibGuide to access electronic resources for your subject area.
From this list of databases, there are links to resources to help you use them. In most cases there will be a factsheet to help you get started with your search. Some databases also have online tutorials to assist you.
Almost all electronic resources require a password to access them off campus. In most cases this will be your University ICT account username and password.
There are some technical requirements to enable your off-campus PC to access the full range of electronic resources. For more information go to the Technical requirements page.
